There are a lot of different shingle choices out there. Scott has been roofing for over 40 years and he has seen a lot of roofing products come and go. There is a reason Colorado Roof Toppers only installs asphalt shingles. They are time tested, easy to install, affordable, and they last a long time.
In Colorado, Colorado Roof Toppers recommends the use of standard dimensional shingles versus a 3-Tab shingle. 3-Tab shingles may cost a little less, but they do not hold up as well in high wind conditions, they do not have as long of life, and many municipalities will not allow the use of them.
More and more homeowners are moving towards a Class IV shingle. Class IV shingles are impact resistant. They are not hail proof, but they are designed to hold up better when hit with hail. If your roof gets hit with golf ball size hail, nothing is going to save it. It will need to be replaced. The purpose of a Class IV shingle is to extend the life of your roof when it gets hit with smaller hail. Most insurance companies offer a discount on your homeowners insurance premium if you have a Class IV shingle installed on the roof.
The shingles we recommend and install most often are CertainTeed Northgate ClimateFlex Shingles, CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex Shingles, or CertainTeed Landmark Shingles. Landmarks are a standard shingle. Landmark ClimateFlex shingles are a Class IV standard shingle. Northgates are the best Class IV shingle on the market in terms of value and durability.
If you are looking for something different that will really make your roof stand out and make your home look amazing, you might be interested in a designer or "luxury" shingle. In that case we recommend CertainTeed Presidential Shake Shingles or CertainTeed Presidential Shake TL Shingles. Presidential Shake shingles are designed to have a thicker, more dimensional look to them. The TL in Presidential Shake TL stands for tri laminate. They have three layers of material making them one of the heaviest and thickest shingles on the market. CertainTeed Presidential Shake Shingles are available in an IR (Impact Resistant) version.
All manufacturers design their shingles to be installed as part of a complete roof system. The idea is that all the components of the roof work together to protect your home and extend the life of your roof. This video is CertainTeed's explanation of their Integrity Roof System.
